The dismissal of Steven Gerrard from his role as Aston Villa coach is a reason to recall many bad experiences of football legends who did not easily transfer their legend to the bench from the coach’s chair.

This reminded everyone of Frank Lampard’s harsh experience with Chelsea, after he walked out the back door of the Blues, in new evidence that someone’s success on the field does not mean repeating it off it.

Lampard had a distinguished start with Chelsea in the first season after qualifying for the Champions League, but the continuing collapse prompted Roman Abramovich, the club’s owner at the time, to ignore the feelings and appoint Thomas Tuchel in his place.

What Lampard and Gerrard experienced, many coaches, and legends who were unable to repeat what they presented on the pitches, but whose image was greatly shaken through training.

From Maradona and Henry to Lampard and Gerrard, we review the most prominent of these failed models.

  • Sir Bobby CharltonEurosport

    1 Sir Bobby Charlton

Despite what Sir Bobby Charlton provided with Manchester United, his training experience was not bright, as he trained Preston from 1973 to 1975 and did not have any other experience after that.
  • Thierry Henry(C)Getty Images

    2 Thierry Henry

One of the most important legends in the history of world football, he did not succeed in coaching either, despite his brilliance with Arsenal and Barcelona during his career as a player.

His experience with Monaco was harsh, as he left after 20 games in 2019 when the team was on the brink of relegation with him.

Even in his previous experience with the Montreal Impact, things did not improve, as he played 29 matches and won only 9 of them amid rumors about his departure.

He settled in him, starting from 2021, as an assistant coach for the Belgium national team, related to offensive tasks, but is this enough for the Frenchman’s ambition?

    3 Alan Shearer

One of the most important goalscorers in the history of England, but he unexpectedly failed when he coached Newcastle United in 2009, where he played 8 matches and won only one.

    4 Ruud Gullit

He started his career with Chelsea in 1996 and won the FA Cup with him, before it turned into a nightmare.

Gullit failed with Newcastle, Feyenoord and the American Galaxy, and his coaching career ended after working as an assistant in the Netherlands national team in 2017.

    5 Diego Armando Maradona

The late star is considered one of the most important, if not the most important, stars in football history, but his coaching career has never been like that.

The most important stop was in 2008 with the Argentina national team, but he left after the failure in the 2010 World Cup and the loss from Germany 4/0 in the quarter-finals.

Maradona had some unimpressive experiences after that with Al Wasl, Fujairah and Dinamo Brest, up to his last team Jimnasia.

    6 Clarence Seedorf

He trained Milan in January 2014 and quickly left after only 22 games, and he also failed with the Cameroonian national team and played with him only 10 games.

    7 Lothar Matthews

He previously worked with Rapid Vienna, Partizan, Hungary and Bulgaria, but his coaching career ended quickly due to continuous failure.
  • Sami Al-Jabergetty

    8 Sami Al Jaber

The legend of Al-Hilal Saudi Arabia failed with his club at the beginning of his training career, and he did not succeed with Al-Wahda as well as with Al-Shabab.
  • 2019-12-22 Vincenzo Montella FiorentinaGetty Images

    9 Vincenzo Montella

Cruel and very difficult experiences for Montella, starting from Roma, to Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Milan, Seville and Fiorentina again, and now he is training in the Turkish League.

  • Andrea Pirlo Naples JuventusGetty Images

    10 Andrea Pirlo

Juventus’ dominance in Serie A has been shaken significantly since the arrival of Andrea Pirlo in 2020.

The defeat by Porto in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, made things more difficult and made Pirlo lose the sympathy of his players before he was sacked and he failed to train any team in the wake of Juventus from the major leagues and now he is coaching in Turkey.

    11 Filippo Inzaghi

Contrasting what his brother did with Lazio and then Inter Milan, Inzaghi gave a frustrating experience with Milan when he coached the team in 2014 and left after 40 games, then trained a number of Italian medium clubs and now he is in Regina in the second division.

  • Mido West Ham EPL

    12 mido

The former star of Tottenham, Roma, Marseille and Ajax Amsterdam, was one of the most important Egyptian players of his generation.

But things were completely different in training, where he had many bad experiences, except for winning the Egypt Cup with Zamalek in 2015.

Mido lost the easiest league with the white team, and failed with Al-Ismaili, Liers, Wadi Degla, Saudi Al-Wahda, and Egypt for clearing.

  • Gary NevilleGetty

    13 Gary Neville

A very difficult experience that the Englishman lived with Valencia, where he trained the team in only 28 matches in December 2015 until March 2016.

His most difficult defeat was losing to Barcelona 7/0 in the King’s Cup semi-finals.

  • Steven Gerrard Aston Villa 2022-23Getty Images

    14 Steven Gerrard

The legend of Liverpool went through a series of bad results, despite the omens that everyone saw clearly in his project inside the Castle of the Villains, to be sacked in a scenario that was not popular with the fans of the English star, who seems to need some time and luck to reach his level as a player in the training field.
