Super Clasico crime.. the strangest theft in football history

Football derbies are full of crazy events that are hard to imagine. The strong emotions generated by major clashes between eternal rivals can take matches out of the ordinary.

This is especially true of Latin American derbies, such as the Uruguayan Superclasico between Nacional and Penarol.

One of the strangest events that this great derby has witnessed throughout its history was when Nacional player, Valdez – who was famous at the time for wearing gold necklaces while playing – was positioned in the penalty area during a corner kick for his team, and while he was clashing with Penarol player, Gonçalves, the cameras captured the latter snatching one of Valdez’s gold necklaces and hiding it inside one of his socks.

Goncalves was arrested by police after the match as he was leaving the locker room, and was briefly suspended before Valdez withdrew his lawsuit after Goncalves was reinstated to the contract.
Since then, the Uruguayan Superclasico has been widely dubbed the “Derby of the Golden Decade”.

Habitual robbery

Outside the stadiums, many football stars are routinely robbed or assaulted, and are a constant target for thieves, especially in Europe, where players are paid large sums of money and their homes are filled with luxury items, most notably gold jewellery.

Last year, Spanish police opened an investigation into a robbery at the home of Real Madrid striker, Brazilian Rodrigo.

Police sources told Agence France-Presse at the time that the robbery took place at the player’s home, located near the capital Madrid.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found the door broken and several rooms overturned, making Rodrigo join the list of players who were robbed in Madrid, such as Spanish international Dani Carvajal and French star Karim Benzema.
In October 2019, the Spanish Civil Guard and Europol announced the dismantling of a network of thieves that targeted football players from Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

Spanish media later revealed that among the victims of this network were Benzema, his former teammate at Real Madrid, Brazilian international Casemiro, and Arsenal star, Ghanaian Thomas Partey, who was playing for Los Rojiblancos at the time.
